You’ve heard the old adage an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure? That’s so very true in dentistry!
For young people (or, really, anyone) involved in active sports, mouthguards (or mouth protectors) can be a first line of dental health defense. At Owens Family Dentistry, we see the occassional results of sports played without dental protection, and it’s never pretty.
A mouthguard should be considered an essential piece of athletic gear, standard equipment for anyone involved in active sports activities – and not just contact sports! Accidents while participating in non-contact sports such as gymnastics or skating can result in dental injury, as well. Studies indicate that an athlete without a mouthguard is up to 60 times more likely to experience dental injuries.
There are three different types of mouth protectors. We’ll list them here in order of effectiveness, leaving the most effective for last.
- GOOD – Off-the-shelf mouthguards are the least costly. Available at drugstores and sporting goods stores, they don’t offer a custom fit and can be uncomfortable, even restricting breathing and talking. Though not your best choice, they do in a pinch and are better than nothing.
- BETTER – Boil and bite mouthguards are available at most sporting goods stores and drugstores and usually offer a better fit than an off-the-shelf mouthguard. They are initially softened in water by boiling then inserted into the mouth and shaped by biting.
- BEST – Custom-fit mouthguards are made by Dr. Owens to fit your dental profile exactly. Dr. Owens’ custom mouthguards are durable and comfortable. Their custom fit allows you to breath and speak easily while the guard is in place, and they offer the abosolute best protection for your teeth in the event of an accident while playing sports.
That ounce of prevention may save you pounds of pain, suffering and money when it comes to protecting your teeth during active sports! If you or a loved one is involved in any kind of contact or other active sports, contact Dr. Owens to discuss your best options to protect teeth and avoid disasters.
